ZERNICK DEFENDS INTEGRITY AGAINST USC
"SHAM AND FUTILE" HARDBALL
California Universities racked by sliding
standards for decades, now face rising numbers of scandals.
(Citation: some news article) Now, we need to support
courageous citizens who, at immense personal cost, stand up for quality
and integrity. Example: Joseph Zernick, a tenured faculty member of the
USC dental school, who refused to pass 30 dental students attending
less than one hour of a semester class. After refusing to award false
grades, Professor Zernick was terminated. Zernick is one of five
professors with suits against USC that will drastically redefine the
landscape of academic quality, academic freedom, and tenure in
California and beyond. This extreme legal hardball led USC's own
national star law professor Erwin Chemerinsky to testify in LA Court
that USC due process was "sham" and "futile".
USC appears to be a leader in seeing if these practices
can work. All five lawsuits expose that USC deliberately, deceitfully,
and fraudulently used McCarthy-era tactics to oust professors. In 1995
the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) even took the
extraordinary step of censuring USC, causing USC's standing among
scholars and polls to plummet.
If USC wins these court cases, academic quality
throughout the USA could be undermined. Their position cannot stand.
